On July 16, Eutelsat, digital broadcast operator, and CielEcran, a company specialized in transmitting live events in theaters, offered a live screening of Julien Clerc’s concert in the great Roman theater in Fourvière (near Lyon) in stereoscopic 3D, in four cinemas throughout France. In Paris, the public could witness this extraordinary event in the Gaumont Aquaboulevard. Such a novel experience gives some insight into the potential of alternative 3D contents screened in theaters: the show was on the silver screen, obviously… but also in the theater itself, where some enthralled fans were dancing along to their idol’s songs!
This screening was the result of a collective effort from Eutelsat, DBW Communication and Opensky, who succeeded in the transmission of digital signals, live and in 3D, with no major image or sound drop-outs. Following another world first by a year – Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni, transmitted in 3D from Rennes in June 2008 by Orange Labs and Globecast – this event once again affirms France’s involvement in the live 3D screening of cultural events.
Backstage, director Dominique Durand was flanked by a team of 40 workers; the operation was supervised at all stages by Binocle, whose presence could be seen everywhere; also notable was Sensio’s technology, active at both ends of the chain with its 3D image encoder and decoder. As for the 3D digital signal itself, it was transmitted by Eutelsat’s Atlantic BIRD 3 satellite. This event will likely be screened in theaters this coming Fall, for the release of Julien Clerc’s live CD.
For the moment, as the technical and human cost of such an operation reaches some 170,000 euros, some questions remain concerning the profitability of this type of event…
From June 8 to 12, 2009, Dimension 3’s partner TSF (one of the biggest rental Cinema company localized in Paris area) hosted a dozen trainees for a course entitled “Discovering 3D, from filming to broadcast”, as a part of the International forum on 3D images. TSF, having a full set of services spanning from filming to screening, was able to provide a great training environment to directors, editors and trainers from all trades and all regions, who had come to get acquainted with stereoscopic 3D technologies. This cosmopolitan class at Dimension 3’s 2009 campus (including 3 trainees from Asia!) could get their hands on stereoscopic 3D filming processes in TSF’s studio, but also in outside natural environments. Over the course’s 4 days, trainees had the opportunity to manipulate a 3D rig fitted with a Sony F900 HD camera with standard lenses and long focal. They also inaugurated the new 3D screening installation in the Cercle Rouge, the beautiful 200-seat screening room set up by TSF. The trainees also edited their rushes in anaglyphic mode on a Final Cut Pro workstation.

Redefining the Art of Pre-production
Ken Schafer, Lead Program Architect at California based Innoventive Software, will present an exclusive first look at the new release of their revolutionary pre-production software, FrameForge Prēlviz Studio 3. Due to ship in June 2009, this program will transform the pre-production of stereo shoots by giving filmmakers a photo-accurate virtual “soundstage” in their computer, complete with over 1,300 World Ready™ objects to build any interior or exterior set or location.
Using a special module designed specifically for stereo pre-production, FrameForge Prēlviz Studio offers customizable virtual stereo rigs that can be matched to the capabilities and limitations of any stereo rig or camera. These virtual rigs allow the filmmaker to work out their shot and depth planning in real-time stereo, helping them to identify and solve problems in the pre-production stage rather than on set. Additional stereo planning capabilities include:
Full interaxial and convergence control with or without automatic keystone correction
Learn any object’s distance and parallax simply by clicking on it
Enter a desired parallax, and have your rig’s interaxial or convergence automatically adjusted to produce that parallax at a specific distance
View parallax reports of all visible objects in any given shot, with out-of-range warnings for positive parallax over 2.5” / 6,5 cm based on any target screen size
Generate stereo animation/animatics at full HD resolution in a variety of formats, including anaglyph, left-right, top-bottom and individual screens
Generate printed storyboard output in anaglyph format with all camera information, including height, focal length, convergence, interaxial and angle of view in addition to an optional overhead set layout to clarify camera and lighting positions
So easy to use, it was nominated for a prestigious O’Reilly “Flow Award”, honoring technology that supports creative flow

The FICAM (Federation of the Cinema, Audiovisual and Multimedia industries) is an authority that gathers every month the technical managers of the companies that belongs to this federation. Among the members, all the companies from the image manufacturing chain for TV and cinema. French TV channels, the HD-Forum and the CST regularly attend this commission and take part to several work groups.
In 2008/2009, the Ficam technical commission worked on the following files:
- The recommendation on the audio dynamic;
- The version 2 of the PAD HD recommendation;
- The dematerialization of the PAC HD aiming at quickly defining a PAD HD recommendation as file mode;
- The underlining of the compatibility of the Super 16 with the current HD workflows on the test-image basis;
- The participation to the ISO-standards works for the digital cinema;
- The creation/ establishment of a work group dedicated to the digital archiving of the TV & radio works in order to supply a permanent support that is interoperable to the eligible party.
By organizing its plenary meeting at the heart of Dimension 3, the Ficam technical commission wants to take advantage of the attendance of the best professionals of 3D images in the world. There they will start to think of possible recommendations among the channel of the new 3D-stereoscopic-image technologies, for the cinema or the TV.
One of Dimension 3 workshops will welcome the school Louis Lumière. The National Film, Photography & Sound Engineering School (dedicated to providing pre-professional training for the audiovisual industries) will present “Reminiscence”, a stereoscopic short movie (6 min, 2008) directed by Céline Tricart. The directress and Pascal Martin, teacher at Louis Lumière, will attend this workshop.
Céline Tricart directed her short film on the occasion of her thesis called “Realise a stereoscopic movie”. “I wanted to exploit the different directions that can be brought by stereoscopy. I wanted to prove the viewer that 3D gives an impress of higher definition but also a real immersion into the film action, a feeling we have forgotten since the 2D cinema is part of everyday life” she explains.
The scene takes place during the 18th century. A young man discovers a photographic laboratory his ancestors had forgotten. 1854, a stardust young lady wants a portrait, a special one… “The film starts and ends nowadays with light 3D sequences. As soon as the reminiscence of the scene starts, the 3D starts be more important, giving the scene a brand new dimension before being “squashed” by the flash and the flat laying of the photograph…” precises the directress.
This film was shot in 2K with SI-2K cameras thanks to Yves Pupulin from the Binocle company. The filming configuration used a mirror module developped by the stereographer Alain Derobe. The editing was made on a Final Cut Pro station. The calibration was made on a Quantel Pablo thanks to Ralston Humble. The team visualized the work in progress in the new school ‘s digital theatre (in 2K) sponsored by the Conseil Général of the Seine-Saint-Denis.

In 2009, la Geode one of the five Dome Omnimax theatre in the world, will be a Dimension 3 partner and will opens its doors to a very special opening night…
A little summary about this exceptional place :
May, 6th 2007 is the birthday of the digital Geode. A birth that corresponds to new images and new ways of use thanks to the creation of a technical system that allows live and HD stereoscopic images.This digital system relied on a multi broadcasting with 6 Barco Galaxy HB12 projectors. Systems that cut and rebuilt HD images but also passive Infitec glasses for the 3D.
On the 29th October 2008, for the launch of the feature 3D film “Fly me to the Moon”, produced and directed by Ben Stassen, la Geode added another system that meet the requirements of the DCI cinemas. The Imax Dome of the Cite des Sciences is now fitted with a Barco DreeningsP-3000 (30 000 lumens) projector that, used along with a Doremi Cinema DCP-2000 server, allows a 21-meter screening . That way, la Geode improves its lighting configuration dedicated to screening : a decisive step for the 3D projections!
Moreover, la Geode renew its 900 glasses by buying 1000 pairs of the latest active Xpand/Volfoni glasses that optimise the light projection…
The 2AVI company was la Geode Technical adviser for this project. It was also in charge of the digital installation of Doremi and Barco equipment. Pascal Vinial, 2AVI CEO, had commented “the technical challenge was hard to meet but now we are really satisfied by the results when get during this first exploitation phase”. Patrick Zucchetta, Doremi Cinema France CEO added: “With this new equipment, la Geode reinforce its status as the leader of the prestigious theatres of the Parisian area”.

The release of the first 3D television sets, along with the 3D capabilities of the Blu-Ray format, have obviously garnered much attention from several of the US market’s main actors. Twenty-two companies, from manufacturers to content creators, have acknowledged that a joint effort towards developing 3D was in everyone’s interest: this led to the creation of American group 3D@home.
The birth of 3D@home was announced during the 2008 edition of the NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) forum. The group, whose members include Walt Disney Home Entertainment, Universal Studios, Thomson, IMAX, 3ality, Samsung and Philips, will work on promoting and introducing 3D to homes. “In 2008, millions of 3D-enabled television sets will be purchased by consumers. Sales of DLP, PDP and LCD sets, that can display 3D contents in high definition, should gross more than 2 billion dollars”, commented Chris Chinnock, analyst of the consumer electronics market.
Bernard Mendiburu, stereographer and analyst of 3D cinema for Insight Media (a consulting company created by American group 3D@Home), will explain why the market of 3D television will soon become central, during at Dimension 3 expo, as a part of the talk on 3D display and new visual communication codes.
From Chicken Little, distributed in 85 american 3D theatres in 2005, to the Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, released in over 600 3D-enabled theatres in early February 2008, the Walt Disney Corporation has come a long way. In the meantime, Disney’s animated feature Meet the Robinsons earned $12,000 per screen in its 3D version on its opening week-end, while the 2D version earned $4,000… With the worldwide number of digital theatres able to screen 3D films estimated at 4,000 in 2009 and eventually reaching 20,000 in the future, Disney is having no second thoughts about 3D production…
Meet Howard Lukk, Disney's vice-president of production technology, in a filmed interview where he presents his studio’s strategy in terms of 3D.
When Disney films a live show in 3D…
Disney has taken another symbolic step. After successfully releasing several animated 3D feature films, the american studio has decided to tackle an actual live show. For their first 3D filming and post-production project, Disney chose to film sitcom Hannah Montana's young star. The result is Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert, a programme that was widely successful in the USA and gives yet another demonstration of the opportunities of 3D images for digital theatres…
This concert was filmed under the supervision of stereographer Vince Pace, using 7 two-camera units – that is, 14 cameras in total, installed on 7 Pace HD Fusion stereo systems, 3 cranes and 2 dollies. The filming was done over three days, totalling over 60 hours of stereoscopic images. The production chain included a data management system to separate right- and left-eye images, as well as a pixel/pixel synchronisation system. Disney studios plan on releasing 3D versions of Toy Story and Toy Story 2; the first is anticipated for October 2009, while the second episode should be released on 12 February, 2010. But what about an actual sequel? Don’t worry, Toy Story 3 will be released in theatres in Spring 2010!
John Lasseter, director of the first two films, will oversee the 3D conversion of Toy Story 1 and 2, which should use the original films’ elements. As for Toy Story 3, it will likely be directed by Pixar veteran Lee Unkrich.
"In 2007, we definitely went beyond the experimental phase of digital cinema, and it no longer is a gimmick!", explained DLP Cinema's business manager Nancy Fares during the 2008 International Digital Forum (Idiff).
With the boom of digital theatres, whose number has gone up 107% in a year, the context is especially favourable to the development of 3D-enabled digital screening equipment: their numbers have gone from 184 in January, 2007, to 872 in January, 2008, a growth of 364%!
In such an positive situation, it isn't necessary to convince DLP Cinema's business manager that 3D will have a huge impact on the world of cinema. A study anticipates 5,000 3D theatres will be open throughout the world by the end of 2009; Jeffrey Katzenberg, founding member of DreamWorks SKG, envisions some 6,000 theatres by March 2009, and plans on completing three feature films by then. The film industry has taken good note of the opportunities offered by 3D: films in 3D gross 2 to 2.5 times more than their 2D version. For instance, Robert Zemeckis' Beowulf, produced by Paramount, yielded $14,865 on average in 3D theatres, and $6,838 in traditional theatres.
