The Communications Research Centre (CRC) is the Canadian government's primary laboratory for research and development (R&D) in advanced telecommunications, with a critical mass and expertise in four major platforms that form the basic transport mechanism for information delivery across Canada: wireless, broadcasting, satellite and fiber optics. CRC contributes to the growth of Canada's information and communications technologies (ICT) through industry partnerships, building technical intelligence, supporting high-technology enterprises and working with other research organizations across Canada and around the world. CRC's research activities and powerhouse of knowledge have led to an extensive portfolio of intellectual property available for commercialization.
The Advanced Video Systems group conducts research and development in digital video processing, video compression, human visual perception and subjective evaluation of picture quality related to conventional and advanced television, multimedia and other video communications systems. The main areas of research are: Digital Video compression (MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264), Stereoscopic (3D) video, High Definition Television (HDTV), Subjective evaluations of video quality, Human Visual Perception, Digital Video transmission over broadband networks and Digital video processing such as format conversion.
